Is a Virtual Assistant a real person?

With so many AI Assistants everywhere nowadays, many business owners wonder whether a virtual assistant is a real person. The answer? YES. We are real humans, and I definitely am not an AI robot!

Today, 15th May 2026, is International Virtual Assistant Day, and I wanted to write this blog post to discuss the common misconception about online assistants and how lots of entrepreneurs misunderstand what a virtual assistant actually is.

What is a Virtual Assistant and What Do They Do?

First of all, the age-old question: What actually is a virtual assistant?

A virtual assistant is often a real person working remotely to support business owners and entrepreneurs with the daily tasks that keep everything running smoothly. We help businesses stay organised and save time by taking care of the tasks that often pile up behind the scenes.

VAs provide administrative, technical, or creative support to businesses. This can include things like inbox and diary management, customer service, social media support, research, and so much more!

The word ‘virtual’ simply means we work remotely rather than in a physical office.

Humans Vs AI

In the past, I’ve explained my business by saying“I’m like a virtual personal assistant” or “I provide administrative support to business owners” because these days, it’s easy to confuse human virtual assistants with AI assistants, so it’s easier to describe the term ‘virtual assistant’ in a more human way.

Every day, we all hear about artificial intelligence making its way across every platform, from chatbots to voice assistants and automation tools. Don’t get me wrong, technology can absolutely help businesses become more efficient, however, a human virtual assistant brings something technology can never replace: real human understanding.

Human Virtual Assistants can provide personalised support, problem solve and adapt to unexpected situations. We can make judgment calls and build genuine working relationships with businesses we support.

AI is a great and powerful tool to use for speed and data-driven support, however, it can’t fully replace the personal touch of a real human.

Why Human Virtual Assistants Matter

At the end of the day, Virtual Assistants exist to help make life easier for business owners. We are here to bring calmness and help create structure to your working life.

For many entrepreneurs, having the right support can be the difference between feeling constantly overwhelmed and actually having space to grow.

For me, it’s not all about ticking off tasks, it’s about helping business owners run their businesses smoothly each day and supporting them.

Final Thoughts

So are Virtual Assistants real people? Absolutely yes!

Behind every virtual assistant is a real person, solving problems, building relationships, providing valuable support and helping business owners save time.

On International Virtual Assistant Day, it’s even more important to recognise the humans behind the title who are quietly working to keep everything running smoothly.
